No longer on the horizon, AI is here, shaping everything from business school curriculum to teaching methods to research activities鈥攁nd even operations.

  • Classroom exercises that involve a comparison between AI-generated content and students' own work can enhance their critical thinking skills.
  • Changing faculty habits is crucial to integrating AI into education effectively.
  • Support systems, such as workshops and online resources, can help bridge the knowledge gap and encourage faculty to integrate AI into their teaching practices.

Delphine Manceau: [00:15] AI is changing a lot. The first obvious thing is about assessment methods, exams, exercises, but it's also a great opportunity to change the type of activities that students can do in the classroom.

[00:30] I think we need to teach students how to use it properly, how to prompt, of course, but also to be aware of the biases and pitfalls that might occur so that in their future jobs, they will be able to use it in the best way possible.

[00:46] At NEOMA Business School, we have a very clear policy that students can use AI, but they have to acknowledge it. They have to say what they prompted, the answers the AI gave, and what they added to the AI responses.

[01:04] Sometimes we also conduct activities so that, for instance, they would compare what AI would provide with what they would provide not using AI—like in a small group—and then analyze how AI works. It's a way to make them think about the tool, not just use it, but reflect on it and use it in a better way in the future.

AI is changing a lot.

[01:26] The challenge about involving faculty in AI is that different faculty members will have very different levels of engagement and experience with AI. Some are really committed, have tested all the tools, and really know how to use them. Others are a bit shy about it. They are afraid of it, or sometimes they never use it, but they don't want to share that with others.

[01:53] I think it's important to change the habits of faculty and to show them that even if a new version of ChatGPT arises, it doesn't change how they're going to use it.

[02:11] The risk is that some faculty might say, okay, it's changing so fast, I'm not going to integrate it into my teaching and learning. What's important is to show the general approach and how to use it, and then the tool will change. The approach will remain for quite a while.

[02:26] At NEOMA Business School, we did a lot to try to support and engage faculty in AI. We had two systems. We combined two approaches.

[02:36] First, one is an online tool, a website basically about AI explaining how it works, engaging faculty in prompting, showing 50 tools available on the market, about text, music, images, and any kind of AI.

[02:56] Giving a lot of information and updated information every week. The good thing about it is that whatever the level of the faculty with AI, they are alone in front of the website and can update their knowledge.

Different faculty members will have very different levels of engagement and experience with AI.

[03:12] They can feel comfortable with it. The other element, which was the most important one, in my view, was workshops.

[03:20] We organized small group workshops, with eight to 10 faculty members together, sharing what they've tried, what they've considered, and how it worked in the classroom.

[03:31] I think it was very practical, hands-on workshops about how to change the syllabus, the assessment methods, the type of exercises, type of activities to engage students. And it's been really helpful.

[03:47] About research, we also do workshops. These are very different workshops, obviously.

[03:52] Research is the first activity faculty think about when they think about using AI, how to do a review of literature, how to analyze data.

[04:03] We try to help them consider different options and use it better. AI is a way to challenge a school about the contents, the course contents, the curriculum, and the teaching and learning approaches.

Research is the first activity faculty think about when they think about using AI.

[04:19] So it's also a good way to lead the whole faculty to question and update what they're teaching and learning. That's interesting because it creates some great discussions among faculty.

[04:32] Then I use it personally also in some of my tasks, for instance, when I have large documents to analyze or want to be updated on some topics.

[04:50] I think what's important also is to use it for the operations of the school. We've been talking a lot about teaching and learning, but for many other activities, daily operations, it can help the staff a lot.

[05:01] That's why I think it's also very important to train the staff in AI, not only the faculty.
